The Wheel of Life

The classic self-assessment tool used by coaches and personal development teachers for decades — and how to use it to find your next area of growth.

What Is the Wheel of Life?

The Wheel of Life (also called the Wheel of Balance or Life Pie) is a simple, powerful exercise for looking at your life from above. Imagine a circle divided into slices — each slice represents a major area of life, such as health, finances, family, or relationships. You rate your satisfaction in each area on a scale from 1 (very dissatisfied) to 10 (fully satisfied), then mark the wheel accordingly.

The result is a shape that is rarely a perfect circle. The flat or jagged sides immediately show you where your life is out of balance — and where a small, focused effort will produce the biggest improvement. Popularized by teacher Jim Rohn and used ever since by life coaches and business consultants worldwide, the wheel turns a vague feeling of "something's missing" into a concrete plan.

Why It Works

The wheel works because it makes the invisible visible. Most people invest heavily in one or two areas (often career) while quietly neglecting others (often health or spirituality). By naming each area and rating it honestly, you create awareness — and awareness is the first ingredient of every lasting change. As Jim Rohn put it, "Excellence is not a skill. It is an attitude." The wheel is how you choose that attitude on purpose.

How to Complete Your Wheel of Life

Grab a blank circle (or print one of the six-area diagrams on our resource pages) and work through these five steps.

  1. List the areas. Draw a circle and divide it into your life areas — the six above, or your own mix (career, personal development, and leisure are common additions).
  2. Rate honestly. For each area, score your satisfaction from 1 to 10. Be brutally honest — the wheel is for your eyes only, and comfort is the enemy of this exercise.
  3. Draw your shape. Mark each score on its spoke and connect the points. Notice where the circle falls short. That gap is your map.
  4. Choose one slice. Pick the single area with the biggest impact for your current goals. Improvement everywhere is usually worse than real progress in one place.
  5. Set a 30-day experiment. Choose one book, one habit, or one conversation for that area. Our resource pages for each area point you to exactly where to start. Then redraw the wheel in 30 days and watch the shape change.
